OpenClaw alternatives for online sellers who don't want to run a server
If OpenClaw looks like more setup than you want, the alternatives come in three kinds. Hermes Agent is another free, open-source agent you run yourself. Cloud agents such as OpenAI's dots, Grok Bot and Claude Duet run on their maker's computers, so there is no server to keep alive. Desktop apps such as Yomates put the agents in a browser on your own computer, where you watch them work. Which one fits depends on what you liked about OpenClaw and what you didn't want to do.
Leviosa AI makes Yomates and wrote this page. What we say about OpenClaw and the others comes from their own documentation as of October 2026, linked where we use it. We read the docs. We didn't run the products for this page.
What OpenClaw does well
OpenClaw is a lot of agent for no money. As of October 2026, the OpenClaw Foundation, a US non-profit, publishes it as open source under the MIT license, with no paid edition. You pay for the AI model and for the machine it runs on.
- It runs any model, local ones included, and it can reuse a ChatGPT login through Codex or a Claude login through the Claude CLI.
- It reaches you over more than 30 chat apps, including Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, LINE and WeChat.
- Its scheduler wakes the agent on a timetable and sends the results to a chat. On a server, that runs around the clock.
- Several agents can share one gateway, each with its own workspace and history, and a coordinator can hand work to the others.
- Skills are plain SKILL.md files, there is a public registry called ClawHub, and the agent can write its own skills.
If you're comfortable in a terminal and want an agent you fully own, those are real reasons to stay.
What running OpenClaw asks of a seller
A machine that stays on
As of October 2026, OpenClaw's hosting FAQ spells out the choice. Run the gateway on your laptop and you get a live browser window, but the laptop sleeps and the agent disconnects. Run it on a rented server and it stays on, but the browser there usually has no screen, so you follow it through screenshots. For a seller this decides a lot. The first time an agent works in your seller center, you want to see what it clicks.
Setup you do yourself
As of October 2026, the getting-started guide quotes about five minutes to a first chat, through a desktop installer or one terminal command. After that you still pick and connect a model provider, set up a chat channel with bot tokens or QR pairing, and keep the host running. The command-line route needs Node.js 24.16 or later.
Settings that start open
As of October 2026, on gateway hosts, OpenClaw runs commands with no approval prompt by default, and the sandbox is off until you turn it on. When you do switch approvals on, the project says they are not a security boundary. It also says prompt injection is an unsolved problem and asks users to run strong models and follow its hardening guide. None of this is hidden, and all of it can be changed. It is work to do before you give the agent your seller accounts.
Keeping it updated
The project publishes its security record. As of October 2026, its security page counts 1,799 reports and 722 fixes since January 2026. One advisory, CVE-2026-25253, let a crafted link take over an install and was fixed in version 2026.1.29. An agent that holds your store logins has to be on the current version.
The alternatives, by what you want instead
Still open source, with a team built in: Hermes Agent
As of October 2026, Hermes Agent from Nous Research is also free and MIT-licensed. Its desktop app has a Bot Mode, where each named Bot gets its own role, model, memory, skills and routines, and Bots talk to each other in group chats. It connects to more than 20 messaging apps, writes itself skills from experience, and can import an existing OpenClaw setup. Hermes Cloud is a paid way to keep it on all the time.
Two things to know. Its providers page says a Claude subscription works only on the higher paid plan with extra usage bought on top, and Gemini consumer plans aren't supported. Its approvals cover dangerous shell commands, and the docs describe no approval step for ordinary clicks or form submits.
No machine to manage: cloud agents
As of October 2026, these cloud agents run on their maker's computers and keep working when your laptop is closed. You can't bring your own model, and you need a paid plan from that company.
- Dots from OpenAI each have a cloud computer and browser you can open and take over. They need certain paid ChatGPT plans and run on GPT-6 Astra.
- Grok Bot from xAI gives you several named Bots that hand work to each other, on one cloud computer you can watch. It comes with paid X, Grok and Cursor plans.
- Claude Duet from Anthropic has the strictest approval rules of the three, but in its preview you can't watch its browser, and it is US-only by invitation.
Cloud browsers keep their own sessions, apart from the browser you're signed in on. The dots and Grok Bot docs both say some websites block them.
A browser you watch on your own computer: Yomates
Yomates is a free desktop app built for online sellers. Each agent drives a real browser inside the app on your computer, so sign-ins, popups and forms happen in front of you, and you can take the keyboard back at any moment. It works in seller centers the way a person does, without needing the marketplace to offer an API. It runs on the ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini plan you already have, or an API key, and there is nothing to host. Before it publishes, submits or sends anything, it stops for your OK. Logins sit in an encrypted vault on your computer or in 1Password, and the agent fills them in without reading them.
The trade-off is the reverse of a server. The computer has to be on and the app open. An OpenClaw gateway on a server works through the night and Yomates doesn't. From your phone you message the agents on Telegram, and they do the work on the computer.

Moving a routine off OpenClaw
- Write down the jobs it does now and when it runs them. That list is what you're moving.
- Start with the one that only reads, such as a morning order summary, and run it on the new tool for a week.
- Copy the instructions from your SKILL.md files into the new tool's own skills or routines. On Hermes, use its OpenClaw import.
- In Yomates, the quickest way to carry a browser routine over is to show it once. Press record, do the job yourself, and the agent repeats it and offers to keep it as a skill. Then put it on a schedule, such as orders at 8am or messages every hour.
- Switch off the old automation only after the new one has run cleanly for a few days.

Questions
Is OpenClaw free?
Yes, as of October 2026. The software is open source under the MIT license, with no paid edition. You pay for the AI model, through an API key or a ChatGPT or Claude subscription, and for a machine that stays on if you want it running all the time.
Is OpenClaw safe to use with my store accounts?
It depends on your settings. As of October 2026, on gateway hosts, OpenClaw runs commands without an approval prompt by default and its sandbox is off, and the project says approvals are not a security boundary. Turn approvals and the sandbox on, follow its hardening guide and stay on the current version before you hand it seller logins.
What is the best OpenClaw alternative that doesn't need coding?
As of October 2026, a cloud agent such as dots or Grok Bot needs nothing installed beyond the app, but runs on its maker's model and plan. Yomates is a desktop app you install and sign in to with your ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini plan. Hermes Agent has a desktop installer too, but channels and an always-on server are extra setup.
Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription instead of an API key?
As of October 2026, OpenClaw takes ChatGPT through a Codex login and Claude by reusing a Claude CLI login, though its docs call an API key the safer path for Anthropic in production. Hermes Agent signs in with ChatGPT, and takes a Claude subscription only on the higher paid plan with extra usage. Yomates runs on a ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini plan.
Does Yomates run 24/7 like OpenClaw on a server?
No. Yomates runs on your own computer, so the computer has to be on and the app open. While you are out you can message the agents on Telegram, and they work on the computer.
